My father and I have hunted around Philipsburg for 15 years, harvesting elk, deer, sheep and upland bird. Public land within hunting districts 210 and 216 as well as block management areas like Spring Creek BMA and Black Pine BMA are productive wildlife areas. Wildfires in 2017 burned more than 50,000 acres locally and the regeneration has encouraged a noticeable increase in wildlife observations for many species. Most hunting permits are over-the-counter here except for HD 210 which is a trophy mule deer hunting unit and must be drawn through a lottery. Whether you hunt for deer, elk, bear, lion or wolf – Philipsburg has plenty to offer. If a guided hunting trip is your speed, contact Royal Tine Outfitters based in Philipsburg.
While the hunting is excellent, it doesn’t hold a candle to the fishing around Philipsburg. In fact, the movie “A River Runs Through It” was filmed in these very mountains and waterways. Rock Creek is widely regarded as a top 10 fishing destination in the world. As a blue-ribbon fly-fishing tributary, Rock Creek boasts some of the highest densities of brook, brown, bull, cut-throat and rainbow trout anywhere in the United States. Gaze at the golden eagles soaring high above the steep canyon walls, but keep a keen eye out for moose, bear and mountain lions that inhabit the area.
